The founders of osteopathy spoke of “finding health” as a distinctive feature of osteopathic work. After all, “anyone can find disease.”
What does this mean in our current world, with our busy lifestyle, our balance (or lack thereof) of work and family and rest and activity and pleasures and stressors? How is Still’s model of the triune nature of man relevant to our lives? How can osteopathy increase our patient’s access to their health, increase their resilience, help them grow and evolve and heal?
During this course we will study some of the mechanisms of balanced physiology and reactions to stress, including the autonomic nervous system, the limbic system, the adrenal system, and the interdependency of the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. We will explore some ways in which we can support these systems with osteopathic treatment.
We will also look more deeply into what it means to be a growing, healing, more balanced, more resilient human being. How can osteopathy be part of that growth? How can we help our patients be more able to respond well to both internal and external demands? How can our treatments move more deeply to connect our patients to Health? How can we be in ourselves when we treat to witness the suffering of the history and the grace of the Potency?
Final note: This course was conceived before the introduction of the SARS-coV-2 virus into our lives. The additional challenges placed on both our patients and each of us as osteopaths will of course add another layer to this discussion.
