It is expected that you are already treating children in your own practice. A current Enhanced DBS certificate and Safeguarding of Children level 2 or above (or equivalent from the country in which you reside and practice) is required; a copy of which should be supplied to our office.
Cardiorespiratory and Immune Health
The growing heart, lungs and immunity in clinical practice
This paediatric course introduces the physiology and development of the circulatory system, and its close relationship with the heart and lungs. It explores the principles of working with these systems that underpin our osteopathic approach to treatment, and the importance of establishing good respiration at birth for optimum health and development of the child.
This course allows a thorough exploration of the development of the heart, lungs, and immune system. These systems are particularly linked, the heart with respiration and immunity with the lungs, but also because everything in a child is almost simultaneously developing. What happens in these systems will also have connotations in the nervous system and beyond.
By understanding not only how the heart and lungs develop, but why they develop as they do, it gives us as osteopaths a way in to treat not only these systems, but babies and children with complications that arise during development, the switch over of breathing air, the first breath, and the priming of the immune system with diseases. This course is pivotal to being able to effectively treat a child.
Key Areas of Exploration
- Common Paediatric Conditions: Common paediatric cardiac and respiratory conditions are discussed from an osteopathic perspective, and effective treatment approaches introduced.
- Immune System Development: The development of the immune system, the role of disease in priming the immune system development, and its close link to the lungs and circulation.
- Palpation and Flow: The course gives handles and ideas that allow us as osteopaths to follow the way that circulation, breathing, and lymphatics flow, and how to palpate the difference in a healthy and a struggling system.
- Understanding Vaccination: We look at vaccination in a very broad sense of how that works in a child and how it changes the course of disease. This is not a place for criticising vaccination, but rather an understanding of how it affects the child’s anatomy and physiology.
- Red Flags and Referrals: A student should be able to understand red flags within the heart, respiratory, and immune system and know when and how to onward refer.
Practical Sessions
Effective treatment approaches to support the circulation, heart, lungs, and immune system are explored in the practical sessions, making this course pivotal to being able to effectively treat a child.
SCCO Course Providers: All SCCO courses are run by a resident Course Director, who is an Osteopath and a member of the SCCO Faculty. Pathway courses are delivered by SCCO Faculty and may be supported by guest speakers. Short courses are usually delivered by a visiting guest lecturer. SCCO Faculty members all hold recognised osteopathic qualifications but may not be GOSC registered osteopaths.
Helen Terentjev, MSc Paed. Ost.
Helen studied Osteopathy at the Osteopathic Centre for Children and the London School of Osteopathy and gained her first Paediatric Qualifications (MD) from the Second Moscow State Medical School.
She is particularly interested in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and as part of her neuromuscular rehabilitation work (in conjunction with educationalists in Teach First, CCCU), Helen has conducted a number of studies on motor-dysgraphia in secondary and primary school children.
She enjoys her role as an educator and having the opportunity to be guest-lecturer in paediatrics to post-graduate osteopaths within SCCO. Together with colleagues, she is currently developing more postgraduate and public courses in postural development, and writing a book on baby handling skills for optimal postural development.
