Rollin Becker Memorial Lecture
How can we say that cranial osteopathy works?
27 NOVEMBER 2021
Mandy undertook her professional doctorate in osteopathy so she could investigate the question, “How can we say that cranial osteopathy works?” The timing of her research project coincided with a shift in the philosophy of Evidence-Based Medicine, with the medical profession and researchers calling for the patient to truly be at the heart of medical care.
In this year’s Rollin Becker Memorial Lecture, Mandy will share her experience of her research in a presentation that proposes contemporary ways of understanding osteopathic traditions and practice, as well as the experience of osteopathic patients.
In the lecture, Mandy will talk about the philosophical tradition of Phenomenology, which enables researchers and practitioners to study the structure and content of what is known as “lived-experience”. She will introduce the concepts of embodiment and enactive cognition (which enable us to understand human experience as the product of our whole-person, direct and meaningful interaction with the world) and will suggest that they are relevant to our evolving understanding of the practice of osteopathy and other physical health and bodywork traditions.
All are welcome to attend this lecture.
